Shockwave Therapy

Chronic pain may have a significant influence on your quality of life. Chronic pain can impair your mobility, restrict you from doing the activities you enjoy, make you fatigued and angry, and harm your interpersonal relationships. Unfortunately, standard pain management with drugs is not a long-term pain solution. However, you should be aware that you have another choice for managing your chronic pain.

Shockwave Therapy, a new, non-invasive therapy, is available at the Prolothreapy Clinic.

How Shockwave Therapy Works

Shockwave treatment causes a rapid healing process in the body by accelerating metabolism and increasing blood circulation in order to rebuild damaged tissue. Shockwave technology sends high-energy pulses to the afflicted region for brief periods of time. This activates the cells in the body that are in charge of bone and connective tissue mending. Shockwave therapy treatments have been shown to be beneficial in many circumstances when the human body has been unable to cure itself on its own.

Shockwave therapy generates an acoustic pressure wave that is transferred to the tissue of the body. The pressure wave generated at the point of contact spreads radially throughout the patient’s body.

Benefits of Shockwave therapy

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive and non-surgical way of pain management and mobility enhancement. Shockwave therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shock Wave therapy or ESWT, is utilized in podiatry, urology, sports medicine, physiotherapy, and orthopedics across the world.

  • Non-invasive, non-surgical treatment.
  • No side effects.
  • Accelerates healing.
  • Can be used by all healthcare professionals.
  • Affordable.
  • Coverage is available from most insurance companies.

Types of Shockwave Therapy – Focused vs. Radial

Shockwave treatment is well-known among health practitioners such as chiropractors, physiotherapists, massage therapists, veterinarians, and sports medicine experts.

It has been a popular and perfect therapeutic procedure throughout the years for a wide range of injuries and disorders that occur in people and animals in order to cure and restore the body’s physical performance.

There are two types of Shockwave Therapy radial shockwave therapy and focused shockwave therapy.

While radial shockwave therapy is the most often utilised kind of shockwave therapy in the treatment of musculoskeletal problems, focused shockwave therapy is becoming the favored treatment option for more acute patients requiring more accuracy.

What exactly is the difference between radial shockwave therapy and focused shockwave therapy?

Radial shockwaves, also known as soft shocks, are better for larger treatment areas of superficial indications. Radial pressure waves use compressed air to accelerate at a high speed and the transmitter is used to decelerate the speed.

The radial pressure waves are at the highest intensity and energy density at the transmitter surface and the pressure waves lose power the deeper they enter the body. This makes it a good treatment for when the targeted tissue is superficial such as in plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, or the Achilles tendon.

Storz radial systems shockwave therapy machines provide a range of transmitters that enable the treatment of local and wide superficial regions to penetrate tissue layers, expedite healing, break up adhesions, and release trigger points.

Focused shockwaves, also known as hard shocks, penetrate deeper into the tissues than radial shockwaves and target a single region. It can help with issues such as tissue near the bone, calcifications, and non-unions.

Focused shockwaves produce pressure through the transmitter without losing energy as it penetrates deep into the body’s tissues using a cylindrical coil. The energy distributed at the point of focussed shockwaves is modest, limiting soft tissue injury.

Choosing the appropriate type of shockwave therapy for your patients is a crucial component of the diagnostic process.

How long does Shockwave therapy take to work?

Shockwave therapy may take some time to show benefits because it is manual therapy. While some patients experience instant pain reduction after therapy, others may need several weeks to see any substantial pain relief.

Does this treatment work for everyone?

Yes. In reality, the vast majority of patients who have used this medication have had positive outcomes. In clinical trials, almost 91% of patients reported good outcomes, including a reduction in chronic pain, increased mobility, and other health benefits. Approximately 80% of all patients are pleased with the results of this therapy.

Is this treatment safe for everyone?

Yes. The FDA has authorised this therapy for the treatment of pain as well as other health issues like as stress fractures, cellulite, and erectile dysfunction. Before they may be used on the public market, FDA-approved treatments must undergo rigorous clinical studies and withstand clinical evaluation.

Transmitters

Radial transmitters
The radial transmitters have been used successfully for years and are suited for the treatment of all typical pressure wave indications such as tendinopathies, heel and shoulder pain, and myofascial trigger points.

PERI-ACTOR® fascia transmitters
The four PERI-ACTOR® transmitters according to Swart/Di Maio have been developed especially for fascia treatment. The »knuckle«, »scoop«, »sphere« and »scraper« versions allow adapting the treatment to the individual fascia structure. Thanks to the special shapes of the transmitters it is possible to dissolve clots in the fasciae, as well as to prevent and eliminate pain.

SPINE-ACTOR® transmitters

The three differently sized SPINE-ACTOR® transmitters make special treatments in the paravertebral region possible. Owing to the forked »Double Tip« shape of the transmitters, the paravertebral muscles of the entire spine in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar zones can be optimally reached
